A dehumidifier draws air in over a filter and passes it over some cold coils, similar to the coils on a refrigerator. The temperature difference causes condensation and the water then drips into a holding tank. The air is then reheated to room temperature and blown back out of the dehumidifier, fresh and dry.
All holding tanks are protected against the possibility of overflowing and most dehumidifiers have a direct drainage hose option instead of emptying the tank. The only other maintenance is the unit filter needs a light wash or brush every so often.
The dehumidifier, if sized correctly, can control the internal humidity level which means you can reduce the risk of mould and dust mites (Relative Humidity [RH] over 60% provides excellent conditions for mould growth, which in turn creates breeding conditions for dust mites). Dehumidifiers can also assist in reducing musty smells / odours when rooms / homes are closed up restricting ventilation (stagnant air).
The selection of the dehumidifier will determine how you achieve your desired humidity target. For comfortable conditions 44 – 55 humidity is normal. For high valued items (e.g. books or stamps) the desired target may be lower to protect your investment.
If your dehumidifier has an adjustable humidistat it allows you to dial/set your desired humidity level and the unit will automatically maintain it. You can rest assured that Moisture Control Services only sells units with a humidistat.
These will require the purchase and use of a Hygrometer – a gauge which measures humidity. How to use – Commence your dehumidifier on a selected speed, operate for 24 hours, then place your hygrometer in a central location of desired area to control approximately 300mm off the floor (e.g. place on top of a coffee table).
If humidity is below desired target; decrease speed on dehumidifier / if humidity is above desired target increase speed on dehumidifier.
After 24 hours place hygrometer in exactly the same location and adjust speed on dehumidifier. Continue this process until you achieve your desired target.
If desired target is higher than outside humidity
Do the opposite of the above (e.g. if humidity is below desired target increase speed of dehumidifier etc).
Please note as the outside humidity changes it will impact humidity internally and you will need to re-assess required speed to operate dehumidifier in order to achieve your desired target.
When selecting your desired dehumidifier please consider which unit you prefer in order to reach your target humidity. Units with adjustable humidistat will be more expensive but are substantially easier to operate.
