Gyprock / plaster / brick structure must be dry to an adequate level before the installation of coating. Excessive moisture in or permeating from this material after installation of a coating can cause failures such as condensation, blistering and general deterioration of the gyprock / plaster. There is also a very high risk of promoting microbial (mould) growth.
For the brick / plaster / gyprock material we use a Tramex moisture encounter plus model. Reading of moisture is based upon a reference scale where we obtained a dry standard in order to ascertain and interpret the results taken over the affected sections.
To measure /detect moisture, two co-planar conductive rubber electrodes mounted on the base of the instrument case are pressed on the applicable material. The instrument measures the electrical impedance of the sample by creating a low frequency alternating electric field between the electrodes. This field penetrates the material under test to a depth of approximately 30mm. The very small alternating current flowing through the field is inversely proportional to the impedance of the material. The instrument detects this current, determines its amplitude and, after processing, drives the pointer (needle) of the moving coil meter to the computed moisture value.
The moisture meter has three different settings
due to the wide variation in the nominal electrical impedance of different material types.
NB - Concrete Encounter CME4 meter provides an actual moisture percentage in the concrete as compared to a reference scale only when using the Encounter Plus meter.
