Timber floors / structure must be dry to an adequate level before the installation of sheet material or coating. Excessive moisture in or permeating from the timber after installation of a sheet material or coating can cause failures such as condensation, blistering, movement and general deterioration of the timber. There is also a very high risk of promoting microbial (mould) growth.
Timber substrates shall be considered sufficiently dry when moisture content measurements are within a range of 10% to 14%. (Source DR AS 1884 page 32).
MCS uses two types of moisture meter on timber being the Moisture Encounter Plus (non penetrating meter) and the Delmhorst G40 (penetrating meter).
This meter uses a slide hammer allowing MCS to test moisture content in wood at different levels of penetration. The two inch pins have insulated shanks (sides), exposing only the tips. The pins make contact with the wood fiber at the non-insulated tips thereby providing an accurate reading of moisture at that particular depth. This feature allows MCS to penetrate through flooring into a sub-floor. The scale ranges between 6 to 30%.
For timber material we use a Tramex moisture encounter plus model using setting number 1. When testing timber on setting 1 the moisture percentage is detected from reading the outer scale.
To measure /detect moisture, two co-planar conductive rubber electrodes mounted on the base of the instrument case are pressed on the applicable material. The instrument measures the electrical impedance of the sample by creating a low frequency alternating electric field between the electrodes. This field penetrates the material under test to a depth of approximately 30mm. The very small alternating current flowing through the field is inversely proportional to the impedance of the material. The instrument detects this current, determines its amplitude and, after processing, drives the pointer (needle) of the moving coil meter to the computed moisture value.
