How to prepare for storm season

What to do before storm season?
In Queensland the storm season starts late September through to the end of February / early March. Preparation before the storm season should include:
- Trim your trees and clear the yard of rubbish.
- Ensure your gutters are clean and downpipes are not blocked.
- Check your roof for any loose tiles or sheeting which has missing screws.
- Check your boat is moored securely or protected on land.
- Consider protection for your skylight from external damage (e.g. wire mesh).
- Check your home insurance is current and adequate.
- Prepare an emergency kit with emergency telephone numbers including SES hotline 132 500, portable radio, torch, spare batteries, first aid kit, candles, matches, strong plastic bag for clothing / valuables, plastic sheets, timber strips, hammers and nails for temporary repairs.
What to do as a storm approaches?
- Listen to a local radio station for the status of the storm.
- Shelter and secure pets and put loose garden furniture and toys inside.
- Park your vehicle under solid shelter or cover with firmly tied tarpaulins / blankets.
- Secure all external doors and windows and draw curtains.
- Keep an emergency kit handy.
- Disconnect all electrical items like external television / radio aerials and computer modems.
What to do when a storm hits?
- Listen to the radio for severe storm updates.
- Stay inside and shelter well clear of windows, doors and skylights.
- If the building starts to break up, shelter in the strongest part (cellar, internal room, hallway or built-in wardrobe) under a mattress, doona or a strong table or bench.
- If driving, stop clear of trees, power lines and streams. Do not drive through flooded causeways.
- Don’t use a fixed telephone during a severe storm due to lighting.
What to do after a storm?
- Where required call 132 500 for SES assistance.
- For emergency or life threatening medical assistance call 000.
- For assistance with less serious medical problems call 13HEALTH.
- Cover structural property with plastic sheeting and nail on wood strips.
